"The syllabus is the first introduction students receive to you as an instructor and to the content of the course," (Riviere et al., 2014).
That is a very powerful statement that makes the syllabus one of the most important documents you can provide to your students. It is also important that the syllabus is clear, concise, arranged in a logical order, and contains all the vital information students need to know at the beginning of the school year. Another extremely important aspect of a good syllabus is an emphasis on tone.
Originally, the syllabus below had a number of very aggressive, negative declarations that had to be removed. By deleting and adjusting the problematic language the syllabus below has transformed into a wonderful example of a thoughtfully constructed document. The syllabus outlines the teacher's contact information, class procedures, and assignment formatting. By including all the relevant information and delivering it in a "kid" friendly tone, the syllabus becomes an invitation to learn as opposed to a simple handout.
The syllabus below has also included a grading breakdown, a list of classroom rules, consequences for negative behavior, and ways to earn extra credit through an accelerated reading program. By including additional pertinent information, the syllabus will help guide the students throughout the school year.
