Class procedures are a vital part of any classroom management plan. By having a detailed list of procedures in place, students are free to devote the entire class to learning. Not only that, but "Students want to know from the very beginning what they are expected to do in a classroom work environment," (Wong & Wong, 2018, P. 144). Clearly class procedures are not only important for the teacher, but they are also crucial for the student's success as well.
It is The Skillful Teacher that says it best, "When skillfully performed, all of these routines are valuable ways of organizing and managing a class" (Saphier et, 2008, P. 69). And it is precisely that organization that will keep the classroom free from unnecessary distractions and keep the attention focused on learning.
Below is a brief list of some of the procedures students can expect to become routine in the classroom. A more extensive list is available in the class syllabus.
Students will enter the classroom quietly and find their desks. Bellwork should begin immediately. At the end of the period, students will wait until dismissed by the teacher, not the bell.
Extra paper and pencils will be available on my desk at the front of the classroom. Students can use supplies as necessary. Used pencils should be returned to the used pencil container.
Bellwork questions will be related to the weekly objective and posted at the front of the classroom every day. Students should work quietly until they are addressed after attendance has been taken.
Sharpened pencils will be available for use at the front of the classroom. Students can signal by holding their pencil in the air and I will provide them with a sharp one for the duration of the class.
No food is allowed in the classroom. Water is allowed but must be in a sealed container for the duration of the class.
When I raise my right hand in the air and say "up here," students will immediately halt working and turn towards the front of the room.
Students can use phones for research when prompted by the bellwork or the teacher.
Student will turn their nameplate to "help" and continue quietly working on the assigned reading until teacher comes over. If reading is done, students should work on their assessments for the lesson.
If late, enter the room quietly and quickly find your desk. Do not make any noise or state your name. We all know you are absent. There is no need to interrupt the class further.
Student will be required to hand in all of the assigned work within 3 days of their absence. All of the learning objectives are available in the class syllabus.
Papers and any assigned homework will be turned in at the beginning of class. Students will place their assignments face down on the desk at the front of the classroom.
Students can request to use the bathroom once per week during class. They will turn their nameplate to "bathroom" and quietly wait until teacher provides them with a hall pass.
